Technical boundaries of micro-CPV module components: How small is enough?

With miniaturization of dimensions, new manufacturing methods e.g. from microelectronics may lead to cost reduction CPV. In this work, we focus on the thermal, electrical and optical boundaries micro-CPV module technology with respect cell lens miniaturization. Open-circuit voltage losses due recombination at solar perimeter dark area as well high operating temperature are investigated. The smaller higher increased perimeter-to-area ratio. On other hand, lower power per leads temperatures thus voltage. Based thermal simulations, an configuration for a two-stage optics plano-convex primary glass sphere secondary element is presented. Besides efficiency, also acceptance angle flux distribution considered. Simplified simulations where only two wavelengths considered compare detailed full spectrum simulations.
